The stratigraphy of the Forrestania greenstone belt consists of: 1) a lower succession of predominantly tholeiite and komatiite metavolcanic sequences intercalated with banded ironformation (BIF), sulfidic chert layers, and localized felsic metasedimentary units; and 2) an uppermost succession of fine-grained clastic sedimentary rocks (pelitic to psammitic schists) with minor BIF horizons, located in the centre of the belt.
Greenstone belts are geographical zones that are made up of metamorphosed sedimentary and volcanic rocks, which are commonly found in continental shields. Greenstone belts are characterized by varying sequences of volcanic and sedimentary rocks.
Greenstone belts in western Ontario are highly prolific and synonymous with high-grade gold production. The Red Lake district to the north has produced over 29M ounces of gold and the Rainy River deposit to the south produces roughly 250k ounces annually and hosts 6M ounces in reserves and resources 1 .
Undeniably one of the most famous and prolific gold- and base-metal-producing areas in the world, the Abitibi Greenstone Belt is once again seeing a flurry of exploration activity and re-examination of past-producing mines. Over 650 km long by 150 km wide, it extends from west of Timmins, Ont., to Chibougamau, Que., in the northeast.
